Colleagues, Friends & Family,
In the early morning hours of Friday, September 27th, 2019, our colleague and friend, Robert Dan Johnson passed on from this life. He fought and eventually lost his battle with cancer, but if you know Dan, even a little bit, you know that he was a fighter and giving up was not in his vocabulary. His very last words were in fact, “I want to fight”.
Born in Waco, TX and raised in Robinson, he was father to 3 biological children, a step-daughter and dozens of foster children. Dan and his late wife Betty began their adventure to help children in 1992 when they took the first foster boy into their home. Within a few years their home was full of teenage boys and they were opening their first CPA office in San Antonio. Now, in 2019, the organization has served tens of thousands of children and families out of 15 locations across the state of Texas with numerous supporting programs and services. Because of Dan’s vision and leadership, Pathways is an innovator in Texas child welfare.
He was a challenger and a charmer, a comedian and a contrarian. There simply was no one like Dan Johnson. He had a way about him that made you feel special, inspired and capable of doing great things. He made you feel important, especially one-on-one, and he constantly challenged everyone to be better and do better – for those that we serve. His unique perspective and dedication to children put him on countless DFPS workgroups, committees and special projects. Members of these groups would surely tell you that everyone waited to see what Dan would say. He might tell a story, a joke or share a strong opinion, but the challenge was always there; we must be better, we must do better, and we will.
As we look toward the future, we are hopeful; we believe that all things are possible, and we know one thing for sure; Dan left Pathways in a great position with a great charge – and we will carry his legacy on with pride and honor – to care for those in need as our own and do it better every single day.
Thank you Dan – for your vision, your persistence, your encouragement and your leadership.
We will make you proud.
Please keep Dan’s wife Christina, his step-daughters, his grandchildren and the entire family in your prayers during this difficult time.
