A DIFFERENT PROBLEM FOR FAMILIES WHEN HEADING BACK TO SCHOOL: SUPPLIES

It is no secret that heading back to school is looking very different for children and families this year. Shopping for school supplies is the unofficial tradition that signifies the ending of summer and that a new year of learning is about to begin. Parents brace themselves for shopping trips with their children in retail stores where shelves are lined with colorful notebooks, pencils, lunch boxes, and backpacks with children’s favorite cartoon characters on them. This year many families are in dire need of assistance to purchase the supplies their children need to be successful, including families caring for children experiencing foster care.
The National Retail Federation estimated families will spend an average of $674 on needed back-to-school supplies and clothing—an amount many foster and kinship families are unable to afford. Pathways Youth and Family Services is asking for donations from the community to help purchase needed school supplies for children and youth living in foster care. “The first day of school is exciting and stressful for most children and youth. Being in foster care can make the first day feel even more so. Helping dedicated and loving foster and kin caregivers with school supplies gives them one less thing to worry about so they can focus on making that first day of school special for the children in their care” says Pathways’ CEO Tina Amberboy.
